The New Kid on the Green Block

I’m the new kid on the green block and it’s been a life changing experience. Let’s just say, unbeknownst to most, I am one of the most un-green people on the planet. My ignorance to eco issues would probably astounds my fellow greenies. However, I feel I pose more as the devil’s advocate to the growing group. I feel its my responsibly to remind people that living a sustainable lifestyle, is not as easy as it seems. It can be an expensive, trying, time consuming, painful effort that is challenging for some and near impossible for those are less fortunate. Its easy for someone to say support your local farmers markets, buy green cleaners, and be mindful of the energy you consume daily. But last time I checked, local farmers don’t venture to the hood on a daily basis, you can’t find a Seventh Generation products in any bodga and if you did it was probably more expensive then the dollar cleaning solution sitting right next to it. Survival is far more important than the type of water bottle you drink out of.
But the world is changing, people are REALLY becoming more conscious which has forced me to wizen up to the many rewards of going green. Now is my chance to turn a new leaf. A green leaf more precisely. I’m taking the steps towards a healthier life and informing others as well. So for those of you who think that being green is for hippy tree huggers and upper class past presidential candidates (what’s up, Al) I’m here to tell you you’re wrong. I’m a 25- year-old African American female living in Bedstuy, Brooklyn and I’m about to go green (ok, maybe I should clarify with a better color…how about light green?). I decided a great way to chronicle my adventures (and some mis-adventures) is to start a blog (exciting, right?). So I hope you enjoy my adventures and help me along the way.
